Suggestions for a peep

Postby loesshillshawkeye on Tue Aug 25, 2009 8:33 am

Guys looking for suggestions on a peep for my restored aero-force x-80 that belonged to my Dad. I have only shot a recurve and am just getting back after it...suggestions on a peep sight for it??? I am having trouble reading up close...hit that magical age of 48 and things are blurry...don't know if that affects my choice...any suggestions would be welcome. Can I put it in myself???? Someone said you don't need a press to remove the string and put felt under the string...how can I do this...you guys are the best...fill me in.

You can use any peep you want .. I would look at using a Fletcher hunter size peep for a G5 meta peep with bigger hole. You can break bow down by giving even turns out on each limb until cables and string go limp .... its that easy ..... dont go to far .... just go far enough where you can slip string off... that way your cables arent wanting to pop out .......slide your peep in where you want it ..... dont serve it until you know where you want it.... you may have to play around with jumping a strand over to one side or another if you have a solid color string to get peep to align properly......

Hi, I am a longtime Oneida shooter and dealer (until 2007)...

A few basics for quieting your AF...

Furniture mover (felt) strips under your bowstring endloops, just below the string grooves...about 4" long...between the limbs and string.
Look for them at the hardware store.

Ultra Limbsaver "mushrooms"... one between the limbbolt and saddle (where your power cable goes over the limb) and one on the inboard limb (between the cables)

String silencers... these were developed with Oneidas in mind...http://harmonhuntingsupplies.web.officelive.com/default.aspx
by an Oneida/Monster shooter

Heavier arrows...Oneidas really "shine" with heavier arrows than are generally promoted today. My AFs were usually set at around 65lbs and I shot arrows that weighed around 550gr (29" 2315 Easton/ 125gr point/ 5" feathers) ... 9 GPI shafts will really help quiet the AF...Several carbon arrows also come in 8-11 GPI shaft weights.

You may also consider a peep that is connected with a silicone tubing if you are not experienced with adjusting and tying in a Trupeep style.

Good Luck! thumup

Max hunter is biggest ... forget the size. Main thing is making sure the bow is tuned correctly. Im talking tiller within 1/16" of each other ... Brace height in spec.... thats most important... and if you want to sync the cams perfectly you can supertune the bow... there is a wright up on here how to do that. You also want about 1/8" deflection on the tension for your timing cable... the looser the cable ... the noiser... but you will pick up a touch more speed. Then you can add your limbsavers, bowjax, whisker, leeches or what ever you prefer. Jeffie does a awesome limb pocket upgrade as well that will deaden any noise from the pocket area..... you may shoot him a pm as well.

Good points J...

Jeff hasn't posted here since May 1....Hope he is OK...

If you can't reach JeffPa... Tracy at Gulf Coast Archery (website) also does a good job with limb pocket upgrades. That is a critical area.

If Your sight is blurry, go to specialtyarch.com they sell the superball peep that has removable apertures. they also have a lens call a verifier that replaces the aperture. I have one on both my dragon and my Phoenix. I cannot see the pin without it. Some of the Archery shops also sell them. They have a device that allows you to try different powered verifier lenses. The apertures go all the way up to 1/8 in. Good luck in what ever you choose.

Right on. This was going to be my suggestion. If your wanting a clearer sight picture a Super ball peep is it. The peep has a small lense that will clear things up for you.

They explain it a bit on there website to help you make your decision... They cast a bit more than normal peep but are well worth it.

One thing I forgot to mention was The verifier lens was not designed to work with prescription glasses. BUT I wear glasses and the verifier makes my pin very visible but the target is slightly out of focus, Thats why You need to find a shop where they are sold so you can find the best power in the lens. so its a good trade off. Without the verifier I could not use a pin. the sight looks like its full of dryer lint instead of a pin.
